Pairing a handy short-telephoto focal length and an ultra-bright maximum aperture, the Canon 85mm f1.4 L IS lens is destined to spend most of its time mounted on the front of portrait photographer's DSLRs. The 85mm focal length is known to be flattering on human facial features, while it is also handy for providing some space between you and your model, so they can act at ease during the shoot. When mounted on APS-C format DSLRs this lens provides a more magnified equivalent of 136mm, allowing you to stand even further back. The bright f1.4 aperture makes creating background blur a breeze, as well as allowing you to shoot in low-light conditions, but it must be said, the real gift to low-light shooters is the built-in Image Stabiliser, which is a rarity in lenses of this type.
Whether your subject is still amd posing, or on the move around the scene, the UltraSonic motor of the Canon 85mm f1.4 lens is fit for the task, with its fast and whisper quiet performance. Canon have put a lot into the optical construction of the lens, including a glass-molded aspherical element to reduce distortions and aberrations, while increasing sharpness and detail, while the air sphere coating performs a similar task of reducing flare and ghosting, and maximising contrast and colour fidelity. As it is an L-series lens, it should come as no surprise that this lens is tough, with dust and moisture-resistance, as well as fluorine coating to prevent surface damage.
