The Tamron 70-180mm f2.8 zoom lens is a portable, high-performance zoom lens that introduces an excellent level of versatility to the Sony E-Mount Mirrorless system. This well-designed lens is compact enough to be suited to everyday photography, while it covers an expansive short to medium telephoto range that will suit many styles of photography and videography, including portraiture and general-purpose shooting. As well as the versatile zoom range, this Tamron lens features a fast f2.8 constant aperture, meaning it can be used with the same freedom when you are using the wider reaches of the lens as you can when the lens is zoomed to a maximum.
This Tamron zoom lens features a premium optical and physical design. Optically it features a range of high-end elements, including XLD, LD, GM and Aspherical elements, which means image sharpness and detail are available in abundance, while distortions are well-maintained. Tamron's BBAR G2 coating has been applied, which reduces the appearance of ghosting and flare and assures excellent colour reproduction and contrasty images. Physically this lens is moisture-resistant, as well as featuring fluorine coating to protect the front element from any surface damage.
Well suited to the fast and powerful Sony Mirrorless cameras that it is compatible with, the Tamron 70-180mm f2.8 zoom lens features a speedy, precise and quiet AF system, which Tamron calls its VXD drive. This is the first linear AF motor that Tamron has implemented in their lens designs. Using manual focus, this lens can focus as close as 0.27m at the wide end, and 0.85m at the tele end, while using Autofocus a respectable closest focus of 0.85m is available throughout the entire zoom range.
